How Unions help all workersUnionized workers receive more generous health benefits than non-unionized workers. They also pay lower health care deductibles, and a smaller share of the costs for family coverage.Unionized workers receive better pension plans. Not only are they more likely to have a guaranteed benefit in retirement, their employers contribute more toward pensions.Unionized workers receive more vacation time and more total paid leave (vacations and holidays).Strong unions set a pay standard that non-union employers follow. For example, a high school graduate whose workplace is not unionized, but whose industry is 25% unionized is paid more than similar workers in less unionized industries.Unions play a pivotal role both in securing legislated labor protections and rights such as safety and health, overtime and family-medical leave and in enforcing those rights on the job.Because union members are more informed, they are more likely to benefit from social insurance programs such as unemployment insurance and workers compensation. The plain fact is that unions make a substantial difference.

WHAT IS A UNION CONTRACT
It is a legally binding contract between the workers and the employer.The union contract guarantees wages, benefits and working conditions. It is negotiated and agreed to by the union workers and management. The length of each union contract is always several years, with three or four years being the most common. When the contract is near expiration, negotiations begin on a new agreement.Union members in the bargaining unit have final say on the terms of the contract. They appoint a bargaining committee of co-workers. Professional negotiators employed by the union a work with the bargaining committee. Before formal negotiations begin, members have full opportunity to voice their desires about the terms of the contract. It takes a simple majority of bargaining unit members to ratify a contract.
Our contract with Kroger espires in May 2008. . Only Union members may perticipate in this process. To attend meetings, prehaps be on the bargainging committee and to vote on the contract to accept or reject, YOU MUST BE a member of the Union.
